About the Artist

My Story

Hello, I am Kimberly Ferguson, a visual artist. I enjoy making abstract paintings and watercolors, many of them atmospheric with nods to realism and nature. While painting with watercolor, I really enjoy the process of making a painting like seeing the movement of the pigments across the paper, and creating surprising textures and flows. When I creates abstract paintings I like to balance between organic forms and make deliberate brush stokes in her art. I make art regularly and love learning about different materials and techniques and strengthening my skills.

Growing up in New York City with my mother and brother and creative family members, I knew from an early age that I liked making art. Art was always an outlet for creative expression for me, but I never really believed it was something I could do all the time. I felt I had to do something else, more serious and that belief followed my to adulthood. I kept making art from time to time, but not as a practice. It wasn’t until I went to college where my love for creating art was lit aflame again. I loved learning about art and exploring new materials. I loved it so much I majored in it and studied abroad in Florence, Italy to further embrace it.

Even while knowing I loved art I was still did not believe that it would be something I could do as a career. It wasn’t until I was working in education when I realized I didn’t want to be a teacher. I wanted to make art. I remember painting a watercolor on a cool and cloudy morning on the back porch of our cabin that overlooked the hills and out to the Gulf of Nicoya in Costa Rica. All I could hear was birds, all I saw was the plants on the property and the tops of clouds and I just remember thinking I need to live like this.

That trip gave the realization that art is not a want or just something to do on the side, it is a need, a requirement, a necessity. It also introduced me to nature travel which is also a need for me. As I currently live in New York City, there is not as much greenery as I would like and too much construction, I go to places like Central Park or the New York Botanical Gardens as much as I can. In the mean time, I will do as the song goes in the Sound of Music, “Climb Every Mountain/ Ford every stream/ Follow every rainbow/‘Till you find your dream.”
